2012 has come and gone. With it, Village residents upped the ante even more, recycling more than any other year prior. Perhaps even more impressive, residents cut garbage usage by nearly 100 tons, decreasing the amount of material over 7% from 2011.
- Recycling - 587.04 tons. An increase of 4.78 tons from 2011 (1% increase)
- Garbage - 1109.75 tons. A decrease of 82.2 tons from 2011 (7% decrease)
- An increase of nearly 2% in our overall diversion rate to 36.25% of overall collections to recycling
Not only is the increased recycling a great achievement, but the reduced garbage is just as important. Outside of the benefit of recycling more goods as opposed to landfilling them, it provides a financial benefit as well. It costs the Village nearly $50 per ton to take garbage to the dump, while recycling actually provides a small rebate back to the Village. So, recycling literally saves money.
